It is currently December 21st. Although everyone else is overly excited of the arrival of Christmas, Leah is not. For the past four days, Leah has been staying insider her house sleeping countless hours in her own bedroom. She demonstrates great cravings for food, mainly those that involve carbohydrates such as bread and cookies. She has gained a significant amount of weight since the end of fall. Although vacation has started, Leah does not wish to socialize with her friends or anyone else. She has difficulty focusing on her vacation homework so she keeps on delaying them. Her family is starting to be concerned with her, since she withdrew from most of the family activities such as going hiking on sundays. This has been a regular family action for almost four years, but strangely, during winter times, Leah seizes to participate. She was fine during spring and summer but as the weather turns cold, she refused to participate. Every morning, Leah's mother struggles to wake Leah up. Throughout the day, Leah is consistently groggy and lethargic. It seems like she has ultimately given up on friendship.
Diagnosis
Leah is suffering from various mood disorders because from what I have seen Leah is affected about the weather. There are two types of mood disorders depression and bipolar disorder. Leah became inactive and cruel towards the winter and bipolar disorder is the only explanation to fit this limitations. Leah not being happy for Christmas, sleeping countless numbers of hours and not wishing to socialize with her friends also sounds like a mood disorder. The rest of the information such as craving carbohydrates and gaining weight is solidly involved with bipolar disorder. She also maybe going through puberty and therefore prefer to spend less time with her family. Although she is experiencing many symptoms of bipolar mood disorder, the symptoms are not very serious because she is not a potential danger to anyone including herself.
Treatment
Since Leah seems to be suffering from the weather and nature there is not we can do as in treatment. However when Leah gets depressed from this disorder then she can receive some medications such as Lithium Carbonate. I would suggest bringing Leah along on the family hikes no matter what she says because as mentioned above she is gaining weight; the health is at risk if Leah stays home for the whole vacation. Most importantly let her relax and do not make her do anything that will bring her mental trauma or stress.
